What to look for in a car trailer

Check the deck length (most cars fit a 4.5 m to 5 m deck), the loading ramps, a winch post and enough tie-down points to strap all four wheels. A dropped deck or beaver tail lowers the loading angle for low cars and project vehicles.

Mass and brakes

A car of 1 200 kg to 1 600 kg on a trailer with a tare of 600 kg or more is far above 750 kg GVM, so car trailers are braked and usually tandem-axle. Make sure your tow vehicle is rated for the trailer’s full GVM, not just the car on it.

Tilt bed or fixed deck

Tilt-bed trailers load without separate ramps and suit regular use. Fixed decks with ramps cost less and are simpler to maintain.

How big a car trailer do I need?

Measure the car’s length and wheel track, then add at least 30 cm of deck so the load can sit slightly forward of the axles. That keeps the right nose weight on the tow hitch.

Do I need an EB licence to tow a car trailer?

Yes in almost every case: a loaded car trailer is well above the 750 kg GVM that a Code B licence covers.
