Pick the right rope, cord or tie
In this building materials range, ropes, twines, lacing cords and wire ties each do a different job. Use rope for pulling, securing loads and general site work; twine for light tying, bundling and garden work; shade net lacing cord for stitching shade netting to frames; and binding wire or wire ties for tying steel and closing bags. Mamba rope and twine are listed in many sizes, so match the product to the job before you order.
Sisal or synthetic ski rope?
Sisal rope is a natural fibre rope with good grip and a traditional look, but it absorbs water and can rot if stored wet. Ski rope is a synthetic rope that resists moisture and rot and stays flexible outdoors. Choose synthetic rope for outdoor, wet or long-term use, and sisal for dry, decorative or light-duty work. Mamba Eco Rope is also listed in 7 mm hanks for general tying.
Choose rope diameter and length
Choose rope diameter by the load and how it will be handled: thinner rope is easier to knot, while thicker rope is stronger and easier to grip when pulling. Mamba rope is listed in 5 mm and 7 mm hanks from 10 m to 70 m, and thicker 12 mm and 18 mm rope is sold per metre from larger rolls. Never use general-purpose rope for lifting people or overhead loads unless the product states a rated working load.
Cotton or jute twine?
Twine is for light tying: bundling, tying plants, sealing bags and shop use. Mamba cotton shop twine is listed in 100 g (117 m) and 500 g (585 m) packs, and jute twine in 1 kg with 320 m. Cotton is soft and easy on the hands, while jute is a coarser natural fibre with more grip. Both are natural fibres that break down outdoors over time, which suits garden and nursery work.
Shade net lacing cord
Lacing cord stitches shade netting to frames and tension cables and joins panels together. It is listed in 2 mm and 2.5 mm thicknesses, in black, green and white, from 20 m lengths up to 200 m, 300 m and 600 m rolls. Choose a colour that matches the netting and a length that covers the full perimeter and every join, with extra for knots. Even lacing spreads wind load across the net.
Binding wire and bag ties
Binding wire is soft, thin wire for tying reinforcing steel, fixing and general workshop jobs, and is listed in 0.90 mm in 250 g packs. Potato bag wire ties are pre-cut 150 mm ties of 1.0 mm wire, sold in packs of 1000, for closing produce bags quickly. Wear gloves when handling wire ties and binding wire, since cut ends are sharp, and store wire dry to slow rusting.
Building Materials: common questions
How do I attach shade netting to a frame?
Lace the net edge to the frame or tension cable with shade net lacing cord in a continuous spiral at even spacing, pulling it firm as you go. Even lacing spreads wind load and helps prevent tears. Use cord in a matching colour, and allow enough length for the whole perimeter, every join and the knots.
What is binding wire used for?
Binding wire is soft, easily twisted wire used mainly to tie reinforcing bars together before concrete is cast, and for general tying on site and on the farm. It bends by hand or with pliers and holds its shape once twisted. Veldkraft lists 0.90 mm binding wire in 250 g packs.
Which twine is good for tying plants?
Jute and cotton twine are both soft natural fibres that hold plants to stakes without cutting into stems. Jute has more grip and blends into the garden, while cotton is finer and softer. Tie loosely to allow for growth, and replace twine each season, because natural fibres weaken outdoors.
Can I collect building materials from Veldkraft?
