kWh and usable capacity
Battery size is given in kWh. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries let you use most of that capacity every day, while lead-acid batteries last longer if you use only about half.
Cycle life
Good LiFePO4 batteries are commonly rated for several thousand cycles, which is why they cost more up front but less per year of use.
Compatibility
The battery must be approved for your inverter so the two can communicate and charge safely. Low-voltage (48 V) and high-voltage batteries are not interchangeable.
Where to put it
Mount batteries somewhere cool, dry and ventilated, off the floor and out of direct sun.
Batteries: common questions
How long will a 5 kWh battery last?
Divide the usable kWh by your load. A 5 kWh lithium battery running about 500 W of lights, fridge, TV and Wi-Fi lasts roughly 8 to 9 hours; at 2 kW it lasts about 2 hours.
